We found this great device after a trip with our kids.  The hotel doors in most cases are meant to automatically unlock when the door handle is turned from the inside.  The handle also turns downward.  The end result is that our toddler who could barely reach the door was able to pull down, unlock the door and get it opened enough to either leave the hotel room or get her finger pinched in the door.  Don't let this happen to you!

Actually, whether a door can be opened by force is a function of several things including - the doorframe, the door itself (hollow core or solid) and the locking device. Any of these might give-way under the right circumstances.
